Hammerfest has long been known as the world’s northernmost city, a title that has really belonged to Honningsv?g since 1996, although it is still disputed whether Honningsv?g meets the requirements for city status. The center of Hammerfest is very small and compact, and you will quickly become known in the city within a few hours on foot. The main street in Hammerfest is Strandgata, where you will find most shops.
Hammerfest gained city status as early as 1789, and in 1891 it became the first city in Norway and Northern Europe to have electric street lighting. Hammerfest was a naval base for Germany during World War II and was totally destroyed by the Nazis during the retreat. The city’s oldest house is therefore the burial chapel of 1939.
